On 22 August I went into a store to buy, amongst other things, Sunlight Dishwashing Liquid. It was fortunately on special at P15.95 as shown on the shelf. When I got to the till, the Dishwashing liquid was P19.95. I told the cashier that the Liquid was on special, she checked through the advertised specials then said, “No, its actually the green liquid that is on special not this one” (I had a peach-coloured one). I told her that nowhere does it state the colour of the dishwashing liquid that is on special its just stated “Sunlight Dishwashing Liquid 750ml and this is what this is”. As I had just been to church and not in the mood for arguing I left the Dishwashing liquid on the counter?
Is this acceptable?
No, it isn’t.
To begin with it’s what the Consumer Protection Regulations 2001 refers to as a “deceptive act” and an act “of unfair business practice”. Specifically, Section 17 (1) (a) forbids “making false or misleading statements of fact concerning the (…) existence of, or amounts of price reductions”
If the special offer had only referred to green washing up liquid then it should have been made perfectly clear to you when it was advertised. Surely it can’t be too difficult for the store to make it clear that only one type of washing-up liquid is discounted?
I suggest that next time, when you’re not feeling so pious and courteous, if the manager is a Christian, refer them to Psalms 103:6: “The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.”
If that doesn’t work then please allow Consumer Watchdog to do it instead.
Dear Consumer’s Voice #2
[A consumer got in touch asking how many “fools” are out there. He had received the following email.]
To: undisclosed-recipients:I think you are right to suspect that only a fool would fall for this scam. Let’s put this simply, the clues are obvious. Bad English, an appeal to your criminal tendency (“do you have authorized access to it in the absence of the owner?”), the absence of a personal address (no “Dear Richard”), the silly suggestion that you can win a lottery you never entered. Surely it’s all very obvious?
Are you the owner of this email address or do you have authorized access to it in the absence of the owner? If yes, then have every reason to rejoice as the result of the UK online lottery international draws has just been released and guess what? Your email address won in the sweepstakes at the first category and you are entitled to claim the sum of two million, five hundred thousand United States dollars ($2,500,000.00).
Your email address won in the online lottery on this free ticket number: UKL0565A75BZ and lucky number: 0831502. The online email draws was held in United Kingdom on the 25th of August 2010.
To claim your won $2,500,000.00, kindly send your name, contact address and telephone number by email to our Payment Manager:

UK Email: susanwgt@terrapins.com
It’s all ludicrous, unbelievable and an utter scam. I urge all Voice readers, without delay, to send an email to the non-existent “Susan G. Wright” and tell her what you think of scammers like “her”.
Please don’t feel any need to be polite.
Dear Consumer’s Voice #3
Lately last week my friend received an SMS from an anonymous caller named GMX. The SMS read as thus;
"Congratulations your mobile have won US$7.8M for World Bank Int'l Relief Effort Award. To claim contact Mr.D.Arnold via: wbmd01@yahoo.com.hk".
The SMS was resent again on the 25/08/10 and since I had read your column on scams I felt that you were the right people to help her find out if it is a scam or not.
You were right to be suspicious. This is certainly, 100%, without a doubt, a scam.
Organisations like the World Bank, in fact no organisation ever send out SMSs giving people money. Ask yourself this: even if they did, would they use a Hong Kong Yahoo address to contact you?
I suggest you delete the email and don’t think about it again.
I received the same text message on my mobile on the 17th Sept 2010. It showed up on my mobile from WORLDBANK. I don't bank with them so I just ignored it. But was curious to see if others had received the same text.

But since your so eager to make money, and via dubious means, I AM VERY HAPPY FOR YOU TO CLAIM ANY WINNINGS ON MY BEHALF. Get a real job mate. And by the way if your working for the world bank with that kind of english, then the BANK is in real trouble. PEACE........ONE.

ReplyDeleteWow!!! Internet really is an amazing thing!!! Got the same message this morning!!! The same mrs Bellvare, boy she must really be a busy lady, and if this should have been a relief effort from the world bank, why don't they rather send that money to places that really needs it, like Haiti for instance. This is actually sickening, and yes, I would also love to know where they get our numbers from!!! What makes me really mad, is the fact that Chinese dude gives people false hope, like the lady from Ethiopia I read about on another web site, so sick!!!

---If this ppl never give up it's 'cause there are fishes in the river.. Please don't fall for it!!!..
Just out of curiosity does anyone know what they are scamming ?? I mean is it just personal details ?? I only got the sms today in Australia and the contact that came with mine was Mrs Ann Doyle. Like everyone else there was a cash value offered. I realise that personal details are a valuable commodity these days and identity theft is rife in the world , but I just thought I'd ask the question that everyone else is probably asking them selves anyway. Cheers
ReplyDeletewho really cares what they are scamming for??...but since u r asking:
ReplyDelete1. First verifying that your number exist!! (yes I received in Australia too) so Do Not reply via mobile/email.
2. if u reply.. then next they will call you with some other phony scammers/ warnings - a friend recived a mobile call telling him he had a virus in his PC and they NEED TO GO TO HIS HOME!!!...
3. After all these.. u might not only lost ur personal details... probably a liver too.. so DO NOT REPLY TO THESE CRIMINALS>>.
Mrs Doyle thank you but no thank you, contact the World Bank and ask them if they wish to give away the money to people that donot need it. I think they will have a problem giving money away that they do not know of!!!
ReplyDeletegot my message at four in the morning EST, it said Congratulations your mobile have wonUS$9.8M for World Bank Award. To claim contact Mrs.HAhn Doyle via:wbre01@gala.net.
ReplyDeleteLOL first off, Mrs HAhn Doyle? HAhn is a beer here, but the weird thing is i got a phone call the other night from a so called BBC radio, saying i won $2000, well who selects mobile numbers at random? thanks heaps for the warning in advance as i googled this to see if it was a scam, good thing i did...

ReplyDeleteI just received the same message 5/2/11 at 9.55pm. The dollar sign on the phantom amount of ?9.8M is a question mark and upside down. World bank award, i wish. What a joke that these people think we are really that stupid. I tried to reply to the text with something that was pretty rude so I can type it here but there is no return phone number listed. Legitimate Hey??? Beware guys. Not sure what info their after but I'm presuming if you email them they will return the email with a virus attached that will give them all your personal info. Ingore the texts and have a great laugh at their expense!
ReplyDeleteJust got the same SMS. Congradulations your mobile have won US9.8M for World Bank Award. To claim contact Mrs.Hahn Doyle via:wbre01 gala.net
ReplyDeleteI received the message in Australia on my iPhone 4 today like yourselves I automatically knew it was a scam but my only concern is how do they get your phone number is it a random thing ie: do they type any number or flick through the white pages (although I am not in the white pages) I'm not even a GMX account holder so am just trying to figure out when I recently put my phone number onto a website ie: I entered the macca's competion on line yesterday which required my phone number.... Other than that I havn't put my phone number online
ReplyDeleteI just received a text message 1.32am au time wasn't impressed to be woken up re:

ReplyDeleteGot the same message in New Zealand. From GMX $9.8 Million World bank Award claim from Mrs Hahn Doyle wbre01@gala.net
ReplyDeleteI might go to bed tonight dreaming of how I could have spent it, if it weren't just a scam. Not that I'm daft enough to think for a second that it was real.
The GMX scam is also happening in New Zealand. Today mine was for a $9.8M World Bank Award, and to respond to Mrs Hahn Doyle at wbre01@gala.net.
ReplyDeleteThanks to this site, my suspicions were confirmed straight away. Big Ups!! :-) Best response is to do absolutely nothing. When someone (well, anyone) responds these scammers know they have a valid number or email address. Best response it to totally ignore it. Thanks again, Howie.
Just got the same text message and Anne Doyle's changed her name to Mrs Hahn Doyle idiots!!

ReplyDeleteI too received a text from Mrs Rachael Martins, at 1.10am this morning. I agree, how do they get the numbers? I wonder if its a random 'mail out'? As if we don't have enough to contend with during the day with unsolicited emails advertising everything and anything that that you don't need or want, now we have to content with idiots trying to prank unsuspecting people with this rubbish. Thank you for your website. I figured it was a scam, but it's good to know that it's already known about.
ReplyDeleteGot a text saying " Your mobile won $9.8m for world Bank award. To Claim contact Mrs.Hahn Doyle via wbaw01@gmail.com " SCAM!!!!!

ReplyDeleteI received the same message today, i tried to send a message back with some nasty words, but number didn't exist. I am a very poor person, never had much money at all, and to get a text like that is very disheartening. I hope those scammers get what they deserve A BIG NOTHING, AND A WHOLE LOT OF BAD LUCK, SHAME ON YOU ALL.
ReplyDeleteWicked people!!! i know that there are many people out there who would think "It's my lucky day" upon receiving the txt message your mobile have won US$9.8M for World Bank Award. First is the punctuation that gets me suscpicious, next is the web address. Really???? Yes i'm gullable, but not stupid. Thanks to consumer voice for validating my intuition. Chur bro, too much!!!

What a clever Mobile I have to have won such a large sum of money! nb: I have private Mobile Number! How do they find us and how stupid do they reckon we are? Still...if it's still going, I guess there are more than enough suckers out there for this mob to prey upon.

ReplyDeletejust recived the same text with a different contact Mrs Arie Tander same email address wbaw01@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI recieved a text on my mobile last night from Arie Tander about winning US $9.8M with contact wbaw01@gmail.com.
ReplyDeleteThankyou this is a great site.
I also received a sms that I've won US$9.8M for I.M.F Award. To claim contact Mrs. Arie Tander via wbaw01@gmail.com. It was send to my work mobile in Australia but the message was send from a South African number +27749391839. I had a friend phone it but the number was disconnected, so obviously it is a scam, I was involved in a scam a couple of years ago in where I also won some money but because I was not a citizen of that country I had to pay some money in to a Western Union account to be able to get the money. I phoned the embassy and was told that it is a scam, later I couldn't got hold of them, it became fun keeping them on the line. So what out for these scams, they are everywhere!!
ReplyDeleteAt 6.40am this morning (2/07/2011) I also received a sms that my mobile phone has won US$9.8M for I.M.F Award. To claim contact Mrs. Arie Tander via wbaw01@gmail.com. It was also sent to my work mobile in Australia, this message was sent from +27844465656.
ReplyDeleteI also recieved a SMS claiming that i won a FIFA Award at a sum of $1.2 Million pounds and to contact Ronald for claim.
ReplyDeleteI live in South Africa and received a text message last night stating that I won 1.2m pounds from Fifa Rewards and to contact Mr. Trevor Roland "claims agent" in this regard (nr. provided). I found this too good to be true, googled his name this morning and found very interesting comments on this website. I phoned "Mr. Roland" (not from a mobile) and told him that we know about his scam. He tried to convince me that he actually does work for Fifa etc. etc. and that I should call him back in forty minutes. Fifa urged me to file a case as soon as possible. We informed our nearest Police Station who confirmed that 3 people filed cases in this regard earlier this morning (they received messages from the same person)and that 1 of them allready lost R5000. Sadly many are desperate enough to take a chance in spite of all the warnings out there. Please, do not be fooled!!!
ReplyDeletei had recieved a text from GMX saying that i had won US 21 Million dollars and to contact Mrs.Hahn Doyle via:wbre.gala.net
ReplyDeleteI recieved a text-message this morning on my mobile phone congratulating me that I had won US9.8M for I.M.F Award. To claim the reward I am told to contact Larie Vander through (gmail) e-mail account. It doesn't seem that convincing that I.M.F uses a gmail account. The funny thing is that they have written it like:
ReplyDeleteimfawards1atgmail.com (not even using a @ symbol.
The text-message is sent from +447924551450
